Now that spring is here, many homeowners like to jump headlong into home projects both indoors and out. One of the more satisfying projects that has one of the most transformative results is painting.
While painting may appear to be a simple task, it actually has many steps that (if not done correctly) can make your paint project look like a kindergartener performed the task. One of the best ways to ensure your project looks aesthetically pleasing upon completion is to hire a professional like our crew here at All Pro Painting.
Here are a few ways to mistake-proof your paint project this spring or summer.
Remember Prep Is Critical
Whether you are painting the interior or exterior of your home, be sure to take all the necessary preparations before applying any paint. This should include cleaning the surfaces, scraping all peeling or bubbling paint, sanding surfaces that need it, and priming the areas that are bare.
Prep time should actually be the biggest chunk of your paint project. Take the time now to clear the room of all furnishings and cover the floor or risk a potential mess when dips inevitably happen.
Exterior prep should include potentially power washing the home’s exterior to remove dirt and grime as well as help painters understand where potential repairs need to be completed. Cover bushes and build scaffolding so that painting will be able to be safely performed.
Use High-Quality Paint
Sure, it’s tempting to buy one of those gallons of paint in the “oops” section of your local hardware store, but you may want to consider that the higher quality of the paint the better it will adhere to the surface, thus making it last longer.
The same concept goes for the paint you find in your basement. Old paint often has difficulty maintaining its consistency and can separate quickly. Chemicals in the paint may not mix well after extended periods making your paint watery and dull.
Have Patience
It’s extremely tempting to apply a second coat of primer or your main color immediately after finishing the first coat. If the paint has not been given adequate time to dry and cure, it can become tacky when a second coat is applied on top. This is not the look you should be going for when painting your home.
Patience is also important when painting the edges of a room whether it is the edge of the wall and baseboard, the corners, window trim, or ceiling molding. Whether you decide to “cut in” or use painter’s tape, it’s a good idea to give yourself time to do this detailed work when you are well-rested and have a steady hand.
Consider the Weather
This tip is especially true when you are painting the exterior of your home or business. Always check the weather forecast to ensure that rain is not on the way or that the atmosphere will be too humid for your paint to cure properly.
